Cardiac Services Provided at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare and St. Elizabeth Medical Center

Collaboration

On October 17, 1997, the Mohawk Valley Heart Institute (MVHI) performed its first open-heart surgery. That was a historic milestone for medical care in our community, as competing hospitals and boards worked together to provide much-needed advanced cardiac care.

Three independent hospitals in Utica—St. Elizabeth Medical Center, St. Luke’s-Memorial and Faxton Hospital—worked as one to form MVHI, a program now known as the “hospital without walls”. The Mohawk Valley Heart Institute operates as an article 28 hospital in New York State under St. Elizabeth Medical Center and Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare, and holds a New York State Department of Health Certificate of Need to perform open-heart surgeries and angioplasties.

The collaboration that formed the Mohawk Valley Heart Institute is a model for New York State and the nation. We proudly celebrated our 10th anniversary last year, and much of the credit is owed to our healthcare family and the support we receive from them. We would not be here without our community members, business and political leaders, our patients, their families and friends.

Staying true to our mission, we have brought state-of-the-art technology and highly qualified cardiac professionals to our community, improved the quality of life for our patients, and saved lives. Almost as importantly, we have allowed patients to stay close to home and family for better support and care. By making the best use of our regional resources, we have leveraged scarce healthcare dollars to improve cardiac care in our community and region.

MVHI is a model of collaboration, breaking down walls of competition in pursuit of excellence. As we marked our 10th anniversary in 2007, we had performed more than 5,000 cardiac surgeries, 12,000 coronary angioplasties, 30,000 diagnostic cardiac catheterizations and 4,000 electrophysiology procedures, ranking us among the most experienced cardiac centers in the state, and for some procedures, in the country.

The level of excellence achieved by our professionals in our first 10 years gives us a strong foundation for the future, as we continue to expand our unique and exceptional program.

We are inspired by the progress in our community, and will always ensure that “Your Heart is in the Right Place.”
