Mohawk Valley Heart Institute Physicians, Nurses Receive State-of-the-Art Training

Utica – Approximately 40 physicians and nurses from Mohawk Valley Heart Institute (MVHI) had a unique opportunity to learn about the latest medical device treatments at the Medtronic Therapy and Procedure Training Center Mobile Unit. This education site is an 80-foot-long semi truck that contains two virtual catheterization labs with advanced surgical simulation systems, allowing hospitals to bring high-tech training to their staff.

This is another step in MVHI’s commitment to bring quality services to the patients it serves. MVHI is a cooperative cardiac surgery program of St. Elizabeth Medical Center and Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare.

The training systems offer realistic procedure training opportunities replicating patient cases in the areas of cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT), heart rhythm disorders and interventional cardiology. The system simulates both diagnostic and treatment challenges using virtual patients and virtual fluoroscopy with the “feel” of an actual case but without risk.

Over 1,000 physicians, nurses and other health professionals in the southeast United States have been trained using the Medtronic Therapy and Procedure Training Center Mobile Unit since June 2004.

MVHI training took place at St. Elizabeth Medical Center on Monday, July 17 and Tuesday, July 18.
