Under the Heart Institute’s integrated care approach, cardiac surgery, coronary angioplasty and electrophysiology are performed at St. Elizabeth. Cardiac catheterizations take place at both St. Elizabeth and Faxton-St. Luke’s (St. Luke’s campus); and outpatient and inpatient cardiac rehabilitation services are provided at the Faxton campus. The Heart Institute offers a complete program of cardiac diagnostic and treatment options for adults.
From its first patient in October 1997 through May 2006, its care included: 27,878 cardiac catheterizations, 10,000 angioplasty cases and 4,150 cardiac surgeries. Mohawk Valley Heart Institute performed its 10,000th angioplasty May 15, 2006, in just under nine years, on a patient who was transferred from Little Falls Hospital.
In June, MVHI joined with the Masonic Medical Research Lab in a collaboration that enables research on live human heart tissue. The MMRL uses tissue from voluntary cardiac surgery patients for research to better understand the normal function of the human heart as well as what causes abnormal heart rhythms and what treatment options are possible to prevent, improve or eventually cure arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation.
Also this summer, the institute was one of 173 hospitals in the United States recognized in the July 17 issue of US News & World Report by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With the Guidelines (GWTG) program in an ad for its performance achievement in cardiac and stroke patient care.
The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s GWTG program is a quality-improvement program that helps hospitals insure that patients consistently receive cardiac and stroke care in accordance with the most up-to-date guidelines and recommendations.
