Mohawk Valley Surgery Group Announces New Cardiac Surgeon

Dr. Adanna Akujuo

The Mohawk Valley Surgery Group has announced the addition of a third cardiothoracic surgeon. Adanna C. Akujuo, M.D. joined Nabeel El-amir, M.D. and Frederic Joyce, M.D. at 2211 Genesee Street, Utica. Mohawk Valley Surgery Group is affiliated with the Mohawk Valley Heart Institute, a program of Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare and St. Elizabeth Medical Center. 

Dr. Akujuo received her Medical Degree from Temple University School of Medicine, Philadelphia, PA. She completed her residency training in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Montefiore Medical Center, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, NY. Dr. Akujuo spent the last two years at Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York, NY, and specialized in complex mitral valve repair. Her interests are mitral valve repair, aortic surgery and minimally invasive approaches to cardiac surgery.

Dr. Akujuo is a member of the National Medical Association, American College of Surgeons, Association of Women Surgeons and the Association of Black Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons.

Earlier this year, Dr. Akujuo was a guest lecturer at the Accra Heart Summit, Accra, Ghana, where she discussed Pericardial Patch Augmentation of the Mitral Valve. In 2009, Dr. Akujuo presented a lecture for the New York Cardiothoracic Surgery Residents Forum, New York, and a plenary presentation to the New York Society of Thoracic Surgeons, New York.

Her interests are running and Dr. Akujuo hopes to run the Boilermaker.
