MVHI Holds Inaugural Heart Teaching Day

The Mohawk Valley Heart Institute (MVHI) held its first annual Heart Teaching Day on Saturday, May 21, which featured keynote speaker Dr. Charles Antzelevitch, an internationally renowned scientist and physician in the field of cardiology. This event, sponsored by MVHI and Masonic Medical Research Laboratory, took place at the Masonic Care Community, Utica and provided an educational opportunity for physicians, mid-level providers, nurses and other healthcare workers to learn about the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease.

The event included presentations on numerous cardiac topics by MVHI providers and Dr. Antzelevitch, as well as a reception and tour of the Masonic Medical Research Laboratory.

Dr. Charles Antzelevitch is the executive director and director of research of the Masonic Medical Research Laboratory (MMRL). He holds an academic appointment as professor of Pharmacology at the SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse and an endowed chair in Experimental Cardiology at the MMRL.

Dr. Antzelevitch’s career has been highlighted by a number of prestigious awards and honors, including the 2011 Distinguished Scientist Award of the American College of Cardiology (ACC) received at its annual scientific sessions in New Orleans. He was elected a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology in 1996 and is listed in nearly a dozen Who’s Who and International Directories of distinguished leaders and men of science. From 1996 to 1998 he served as president of the International Cardiac Electrophysiology Society, a society of basic and clinical scientists and physicians from countries throughout the world specializing in cardiac electrophysiology and arrhythmias.

Dr. Antzelevitch’s contributions to scientific literature include more than 310 original papers and book chapters, over 250 abstracts and four books. He is an internationally renowned authority in these areas and is often invited to speak at international symposiums and to present seminars and Cardiology Grand Rounds at medical schools and institutes throughout the world.
